Rubus idaeus
Red Raspberry
Rubus idaeus is a red-fruited species native to Europe and northern Asia, commonly cultivated in other temperate regions. It is a perennial plant with biennial stems (canes) from a perennial root system. The first-year stem grows vigorously to its full height, bearing large pinnately compound leaves but typically no flowers. In the second year, it produces several side shoots with smaller leaves and white flowers, which develop into red, edible fruits. The fruit is an aggregate of numerous drupelets around a central core.

Red raspberries contain vitamin C and phenolics, including anthocyanins like cyanidin-3-sophoroside and cyanidin-3-glucoside. They also contain ellagitannins such as sanguiin H-6 and lambertianin C, along with trace levels of flavonols, ellagic acid, and hydroxycinnamate. Polyphenolic compounds from raspberry seeds have antioxidant effects in vitro.
The fruits of red raspberries are an important food crop. The leaves and roots have medicinal properties, including antioxidant effects and prevention of kidney stone formation. Tiliroside from raspberry is a potent tyrosinase inhibitor and might be used as a skin-whitening agent. Raspberry fruit may also protect the liver.

Rubus idaeus typically grows in forests, forming open stands under a tree canopy, and denser stands in clearings. In the south of its range (southern Europe and central Asia), it occurs only at high altitudes in mountains.
