Rosa canina agg.

Rosa canina L.

Rosa canina

The dog rose is a deciduous shrub that typically grows between 1 to 5 meters in height but can scramble higher into the crowns of taller trees. It has multiple arching stems covered with small, sharp, hooked prickles that aid in climbing. The leaves are pinnate with 5–7 leaflets and have a fragrant scent when bruised. The flowers are sweet-scented, usually pale pink but can vary between deep pink and white, with a diameter of 4–6 centimeters. The plant has quintuscial aestivation and typically blooms from June to July. The flowers mature into oval, red-orange hips that can persist on the plant for several months.
