A medium-sized hardwood deciduous tree native to North America, known for its nitrogen-fixing roots and durable wood. It has a straight trunk with a narrow crown that grows scraggly with age. The bark is reddish-black and deeply furrowed. Leaves are dark blue-green, compound with 9-19 leaflets, and turn pale yellow in autumn. Flowers are cream-white, fragrant, and produce large amounts of nectar. The fruit is a legume pod containing dark orange-brown seeds.

The leaves contain flavone glycosides, including the 7-O-β-D-glucuronopyranosyl-(1→2)[α-ʟ-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)]-β-D-glucopyranosides of acacetin, apigenin, diosmetin, and luteolin. The wood contains flavonoids that contribute to its durability.

Uses:

Traditionally used in medicine for laxative, antispasmodic, and diuretic purposes. Flowers are used to produce jam in some regions. The wood is highly valued for its durability and rot resistance, used in construction, furniture, and erosion control. The tree is also important for honey production.
