Hungarian Oak

The Hungarian Oak is a large deciduous tree native to southeastern Europe and Turkey. It can reach heights of up to 38 meters and widths of 20 meters, with a trunk girth of nearly 2 meters. The bark is light gray and cracks into small square plates. Leaves are large, 14–33 cm long, with deep parallel lobes and a light yellow-green color that turns dark green in summer. Acorns are light brown, egg-shaped, and mature in about 6 months.

The tree contains tannins, which are polyphenolic compounds known for their astringent properties. These tannins are commonly found in the bark, leaves, and acorns of the oak tree. They play a role in the tree's defense against herbivores and pathogens.

The Hungarian Oak is cultivated for ornamental purposes in parks and large gardens. The cultivar 'Hungarian Crown' has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is also used for timber and as a food source for wildlife.
