Turkey Oak

The Turkey Oak, also known as the Austrian Oak, is a large deciduous tree native to south-eastern Europe and Asia Minor. It grows to heights of 25–40 meters with a trunk diameter up to 2 meters. The bark is dark gray and deeply furrowed, often streaked orange near the base. The leaves are glossy, 7–14 cm long and 3–5 cm wide, with 6–12 triangular lobes. The flowers are wind-pollinated catkins, and the fruit is a large acorn that matures in about 18 months.

The wood of the Turkey Oak is used for fencing due to its tendency to crack and split. It is also planted as an ornamental tree and used as a coastal windbreak. The acorns, though very bitter in the first year, are eaten by jays and pigeons. The tree provides early food for birds through its gall wasps.
