The berries contain toxic amounts of oxalic acid. The sap within the leaves and stem contains raphides (needle-shaped crystals of calcium oxalate) which can cause skin irritation and blisters in sensitive people. The leaves do not produce urushiol.
Virginia Creeper is grown as an ornamental plant for its ability to cover walls and buildings rapidly, particularly valued for its deep red to burgundy fall foliage. It is also used as a shading vine for buildings on masonry walls, keeping the building cooler during summer. It is listed as an invasive non-native species in some regions and should be managed carefully.
