Prunus serotina

Prunus serotina

Prunus serotina, commonly known as black cherry or wild black cherry, is a deciduous tree or shrub in the rose family Rosaceae. It grows to a height of 15–24 meters (49–79 feet) and is native to the Americas. The leaves are 5-13 centimeters long, ovate-lanceolate in shape with finely toothed margins. The bark is thin and smooth when young, becoming dark gray to black and broken as the tree matures. The flowers are small, white, 5-petalled, and arranged in racemes 10-15 centimeters long. These flowers produce reddish-black drupes that are fed on by birds.

Prunus

Chemistry:

The seeds, foliage, and young twigs of Prunus serotina contain cyanogenic glycosides such as amygdalin, which can release hydrogen cyanide when ground or minced. The flesh of the fruit does not contain the enzymes needed to convert these glycosides to cyanide, making it safe to eat. The foliage, particularly when wilted, also contains these glycosides and can be toxic to livestock.

Uses:

Prunus serotina is valued for its timber, which is known for its strong orange hues and high price. The fruit can be eaten raw or made into jelly, and the juice is used as a drink mixer. The tree provides habitat for over 450 species of butterflies and moths, including the eastern tiger swallowtail and the cecropia moth. It is also used as an ornamental tree in Europe but has become invasive in some areas.
