Ostrya carpinifolia Scop.
European hop-hornbeam
The European hop-hornbeam is a broadleaf deciduous tree that can reach up to 21 meters in height. It has a conical or irregular crown and a scaly, rough bark. The leaves are alternately arranged, double-toothed, and birch-like, measuring 3–10 cm in length. They are many-veined with 11-15 pairs and have a slightly hairy or smooth underside. The tree produces male catkins that are 5–10 cm long and female catkins that are 2–5 cm long. The fruit forms in pendulous clusters, 3-8 cm long, with each seed being a small nut fully enclosed in a bladder-like involucre.
