Morus alba L.
White Mulberry
White mulberry is a fast-growing, small to medium-sized tree native to China and India. It can reach heights of 10-20 meters (33-66 feet) and has a lifespan comparable to humans, although some specimens can live over 250 years. The tree is deciduous in temperate regions but can be evergreen in tropical areas. Its leaves are generally 5-13 cm long, cordate at the base, and serrated on the margins. The flowers are single-sex catkins, with male catkins being 2-3.5 cm long and female catkins 1-2 cm long. The fruit is 1-1.5 cm long, varying from white to pink in cultivated plants and deep purple in the wild.

The tree contains various antimicrobial and antifungal compounds, particularly rich in the bark, leaves, and other parts. The polyphenolic content of the leaves has been noted for its potential health benefits, including reducing methane emissions in animals.
The leaves are used as a preferred feedstock for silkworms (Bombyx mori) and are also cut to feed livestock due to their high protein and energy content. The leaves are prepared as tea in Korea and used medicinally in Asia for treating diabetes and other ailments. The fruits are consumed fresh or processed into syrups, wines, and spirits. In traditional Chinese medicine, the bark, leaves, and fruits are used to treat fever, lower blood pressure, protect liver damage, improve eyesight, and facilitate urine discharge. The wood is used to make sports equipment, furniture, household utensils, and agricultural implements.

White mulberry thrives in mildly acidic, well-drained sandy loam and clayey loam soils. It can withstand poor soils and is found in disturbed areas such as roadsides, urban areas, and elevations up to 4,000 meters (13,000 feet). It is widely naturalized in warm temperate regions and subarctic areas.
