Mespilus germanica L.
Medlar
Mespilus germanica, commonly known as the medlar or common medlar, is a large shrub or small tree in the rose family (Rosaceae). It grows up to 8 meters tall under ideal conditions and has a lifespan of 30–60 years. The bark is grayish-brown with deep vertical cracks, and the tree is often more shrub-like than tree-like. The leaves are dark green, elliptical, and turn red in autumn. Flowers are 2–5 cm in diameter, white or pale pink, and bloom late in the season (May or June). The fruit is a pome, reddish-brown, and hairy with juicy flesh. It becomes edible after softening, a process known as bletting.
