Malus sylvestris

Malus sylvestris (L.) Mill.

European Crab Apple

The European Crab Apple is a deciduous small to medium-sized tree that can also grow into a multi-stemmed bush. It typically lives for 80-100 years and can reach heights up to 14 meters with trunk diameters ranging from 23-45 centimeters. The leaves are roundish-oval and sometimes hairy on the underside. The hermaphrodite flowers appear in May, are white or pinkish, and are insect-pollinated. The small pome-fruits are around 3 centimeters in diameter, ripen in autumn, and fall to the ground. The bark is light brown and breaks up into flakes. The branches are thorny, especially in response to pruning or browsing.
