Berberis aquifolium contains 5'-methoxyhydnocarpin (5'-MHC), a multidrug resistance pump inhibitor that decreases bacterial resistance in vitro. The plant also contains berberine, known for its antimicrobial properties.
The berries are edible and have been used in traditional diets of indigenous peoples. They can be made into jelly or fermented to make wine. The inner bark yields a yellow dye, while the berries can produce dyes of various colors depending on the pH. The plant has medicinal uses, including treating indigestion and possessing antimicrobial properties similar to goldenseal.
