Ligustrum vulgare, commonly known as wild privet or European privet, is a semi-evergreen to deciduous shrub native to central and southern Europe, north Africa, and southwestern Asia. It grows up to 3 meters tall, with stiff, erect stems and grey-brown bark. The leaves are opposite, narrow oval to lanceolate, 2-6 cm long and 0.5-1.5 cm wide. The flowers are creamy-white, produced in panicles 3-6 cm long, with a strong, pungent fragrance. The fruit is a glossy black berry containing one to four seeds, which are poisonous to humans but eaten by thrushes.
