Prunus laurocerasus, commonly known as cherry laurel or common laurel, is an evergreen species of cherry native to regions bordering the Black Sea in southwestern Asia and southeastern Europe. It is a shrub or small to medium-sized tree, growing up to 18 meters tall with a trunk up to 60 cm broad. The leaves are dark green, leathery, and shiny, with a finely serrated margin and a scent of almonds when crushed. The flowers appear in early spring and open in early summer, with erect racemes of creamy-white petals and numerous yellowish stamens. The fruit is a small cherry that turns black when ripe in early autumn.

Uses:

It has also been used historically for making laurel wreaths, similar to the true laurel (Laurus nobilis). The foliage is used in floristry, and the fruits are edible but astringent, containing small amounts of hydrogen cyanide. Historically, it was used for execution in the Roman Empire.
