Laburnum anagyroides, commonly known as the common laburnum or golden chain, is a small deciduous tree or large shrub that can grow up to 7 meters tall. It has smooth bark and dark green, spreading branches with pendulous and pubescent twigs. The leaves are trifoliate and oval with long petioles, smooth on the upperside, and hairy on the underside.

The seeds contain cytisine, an alkaloid that is somewhat poisonous to humans and animals such as goats and horses, especially when not ripe.

Uses:

The wood is hard and heavy, ideal for making posts, woodturning, and as fuel. Historically, it was used for making bows and is known as false ebony. The plant has no known medicinal uses but is cultivated as an ornamental tree.
