Juniperus sabina L.
Juniperus sabina
Juniperus sabina, commonly known as savin juniper or savin, is a species of evergreen shrub native to the mountains of central and southern Europe and western and central Asia. It typically grows at altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 3,300 meters (3,300 to 10,800 feet). The plant can reach heights of up to 4 meters and has two forms of leaves: juvenile needle-like leaves and adult scale-leaves. It is largely dioecious, meaning it has separate male and female plants, but some individual plants can produce both sexes. The cones are berry-like, blue-black with a whitish waxy bloom, and contain 1-3 seeds. The male cones are smaller and shed their pollen in early spring.

The plant contains several toxic compounds, including ethereal oils, which make all parts of the plant poisonous. These compounds are responsible for its toxic properties.
Juniperus sabina is commonly used as an ornamental shrub in gardens and parks. Historically, it was used in abortifacient drugs in 19th-century America. In Iran, the fruit of savin is traditionally used to alleviate urinary and digestive problems.
