Leaves are alternately arranged, 20–45 cm long, with odd-pinnate leaflets, typically 7. Male flowers are in drooping catkins, and female flowers are terminal, forming fruits with a green, semi-fleshy husk and a brown, corrugated nut. The tree is widely cultivated for its edible nuts.

The walnut kernel contains significant amounts of nutrients including proteins, fats (65% fat content with 49% being polyunsaturated), dietary fiber, and various vitamins and minerals such as manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, copper, B vitamins (B6, thiamine, folate), and dietary fiber. The husk of the fruit is rich in a yellow-brown to dark brown dye with antibacterial properties.

Uses:

The walnut is primarily used for its edible kernels, which are consumed fresh or pressed for oil. The wood is valued for its durability and lustre, used in high-end flooring, furniture, guitars, veneers, knobs, handles, and gunstocks. The dye from the husk has antibacterial properties and is used for staining cloth.
