Hedera helix L.
Hedera helix
Hedera helix, commonly known as ivy, is an evergreen climbing plant native to Europe and parts of western Asia. It grows up to 20-30 meters high on suitable surfaces and as groundcover in the absence of vertical structures. The plant has two types of leaves: juvenile leaves are palmately five-lobed on creeping and climbing stems, while adult leaves are unlobed and cordate. The flowers are small, greenish-yellow, and rich in nectar, blooming from late summer to late autumn. The fruit are purple-black to orange-yellow berries that ripen in late winter, providing an important food source for birds.

The chemical composition of Hedera helix includes various compounds such as α-hederin, β-hederin, falcarinol, didehydrofalcarinol, rutin, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, emetine, nicotiflorin, hederasaponin B, and hederacoside C. These components contribute to its medicinal properties, particularly as an expectorant and for treating respiratory tract infections.
Ivy is widely used as an ornamental plant and for its medicinal properties. The flowers attract over 70 species of nectar-feeding insects, and the berries are eaten by at least 16 species of birds. The foliage provides dense evergreen shelter and is browsed by deer. Medicinally, ivy leaf extracts are used to treat coughs and bronchitis due to their expectorant properties.
