The honey locust contains various phytochemicals, including polyphenols, triterpenes, sterols, and saponins. These compounds have been studied for their potential biological activities.
The sweet pulp of the honey locust pods is edible and has been used for food and traditional medicine by Native American people. The wood is high-quality, durable, and used for furniture, posts, and rails due to its dense, rot-resistant nature. The tree is also known for its ability to fix nitrogen, although this is disputed.
