The tree is known to produce secoiridoids in response to infestation by the emerald ash borer. These compounds are part of the tree's defensive response to pest attacks.
Green ash is widely used as an ornamental tree in urban environments due to its good form and resistance to disease. It is also valued for providing shade and as a windbreak. The wood is used in making electric guitars due to its light weight and desirable tone qualities.
