European Ash

The European Ash, or Common Ash, is a deciduous tree species in the olive family. It is native to Europe and parts of Asia, including Turkey and Iran. The tree can grow up to 18-43 meters tall with a trunk diameter of up to 2 meters. The bark is smooth and pale grey on young trees, becoming thick and vertically fissured with age. The leaves are opposite, pinnately compound, with 7-13 leaflets that have coarsely serrated margins. The flowers are wind-pollinated and borne in short panicles before the leaves appear. The fruit is a samara, often called 'ash keys,' which are 2.5-4.5 cm long and hang in bunches through the winter.
