Euonymus japonicus is an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows to about 3 meters (10 feet) tall. It has opposite, oval leaves that are 3–12 cm (1.2–4.7 inches) long, typically 6–10 cm (2.4–3.9 inches), with finely serrated margins towards the end of the leaves. The flowers are small, greenish-white, and about 5–6 mm (0.2 inches) across. The fruit capsule is brown, yellow to red-brown, and the seeds have an orange-red aril. Euonymus japonicus is very similar to Euonymus fortunei, particularly in cultivation.
