The resin from Cryptomeria japonica contains cryptopimaric acid and phenolic compounds. The wood itself is fragrant, reddish-pink in color, lightweight but strong, waterproof, and resistant to decay.

Uses:

The timber is used for making staves, tubs, casks, furniture, and other indoor applications. It is favored for light construction, boxes, veneers, and plywood. The wood turns dark green when buried and is valued for this property. In Japan, it is used extensively in construction work and interior panelling. It is also a significant cause of hay fever due to its pollen.
