Crataegus monogyna Jacq.
Common Hawthorn
A flowering plant that grows to about 10 meters tall, commonly known as the Common Hawthorn. It has sharp thorns on younger stems and deeply lobed leaves. The flowers are white to pink, with numerous red stamens and a single style. They bloom in late spring (May to early June) in its native area, and the flowers are pollinated by midges, bees, and other insects. The fruit is a small, oval, dark red berry-like pome containing a single stone-encased seed. The plant is native to Europe but has been introduced in many other parts of the world, often used as a hedge plant for agricultural purposes.
