A deciduous shrub that grows up to 3 meters high. The stems and young branches are reddish or dark purple, and the bark is covered with 3 to 5 branched spines. The leaves are oval, thick, leathery, and arranged in fascicles on short peduncles. The flowers are yellow and form raceme inflorescences, with each flower about 6 mm in diameter. The fruits are oblong lilac or blue berries, approximately 1 cm long and covered with wax.
