A perennial shrub, growing to heights of up to 6 meters (20 feet) and widths of twice that. The leaves are composed of many hairy, oval-shaped leaflets with spine tips. It bears spike-shaped racemes of flowers, each containing a single purple petal and ten protruding stamens with yellow anthers. The fruit is a legume pod containing one or two seeds.

Larval host for various butterflies and moths. Seeds are a food source for bobwhite quail. Flowers provide nectar for bees and butterflies.
