A large, deciduous tree known for its showy white flowers with yellow to pink blotches at the base. The leaves are palmately compound, 5-7 leaflets long, and the tree grows to about 39 meters tall with a domed crown. The fruits are spiky capsules containing glossy nut-brown seeds known as conkers.

The seed extract contains around 20 percent aescin (escin), quercetin 3,4'-diglucoside, leucocyanidin, leucodelphinidin and procyanidin A2. The seeds also contain alkaloid saponins and glucosides which are toxic.
Cultivated for its ornamental value, especially for its spectacular spring flowers. The seeds are used in traditional medicine for their effect on venous tone and in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency. The seeds are also used to make an eco-friendly detergent.
