The seed extract contains around 20 percent aescin (escin), quercetin 3,4'-diglucoside, leucocyanidin, leucodelphinidin and procyanidin A2. The seeds also contain alkaloid saponins and glucosides which are toxic.

Uses:

Cultivated for its ornamental value, especially for its spectacular spring flowers. The seeds are used in traditional medicine for their effect on venous tone and in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency. The seeds are also used to make an eco-friendly detergent.
