Box Elder is a fast-growing, short-lived tree native to North America. It grows up to 10–25 meters tall with a trunk diameter of 30–50 centimeters. The tree has opposite, ash-like compound leaves with three to seven leaflets and a whitish to pink or violet waxy coating when young. The flowers are small, yellow-green, and appear in early spring with staminate flowers in clusters on slender pedicels and pistillate flowers on drooping racemes. The fruit is a schizocarp of two single-seeded, winged samaras.
